Massachusetts native and controversial Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is back in the Boston area reviewing pizza for his “One Bite” series on YouTube.
Since July 16, Portnoy has reviewed 10 local Mass. businesses. He’s been to Lawrence (Tripoli Pizza & Bakery); Mansfield (Bar Pizza & Salad Co.); Milton (Peel Pizza Company); North Andover (Garlic Breath Pizza); Quincy (Bravo Pizzeria, Liberty Tavern, and Schoolhouse Pizza); Weymouth (The Next Page Cafe); Tewksbury (Tree House Brewing Company); and Wilmington (Simard’s Super Roast Beef).
Portnoy visits recommended pizza spots around the country and rates the pizza after “one bite” for the series. His grading method typically remains the same: he orders a plain cheese pizza, and scores the pizza out of 10 points after considering factors such as taste, weight, structure, and look.
Simard’s Super Roast Beef in Wilmington was among Portnoy’s latest reviews where instead of pizza, he rated a roast beef sandwich. The North Shore spot received the highest rating among his latest sweep through the region with an 8.6 out of 10.
Earlier this year, Portnoy also reviewed Joanie’s Pizza in Chelmsford, dubbing it as his favorite in the state. Following the review, the restaurant experienced lines out the door and two-hour waits daily.
Not every local pizzeria has received such high praise from the influencer, though. Last summer, Portnoy reviewed Somerville’s Dragon Pizza during which a fierce exchange broke out with owner Charlie Redd. Portnoy called it “the worst pizza place in America.” The viral video initially resulted in a slew of negative phone calls and online comments, even death threats, according to Redd. Then, customers turned out in droves to rally behind the business, resulting in Redd closing the pizza shop for a day after running out of ingredients.
Below, see how Portnoy reviewed local businesses outside of Boston. Have you tried any of these spots? How would you rate the dish? Let us know by e-mailing [email protected] or sharing in the form below.
