Jared Sullinger’s million-dollar moment: In the latest chapter of his unorthodox basketball career, Jared Sullinger is on top of the world following his team’s Sunday win in “The Basketball Tournament.”
Sullinger, 32, was once a Celtics first-round pick (and formerly one of the top high school recruits in the country). But after leaving Boston as a free agent in 2016 (and the NBA a year later), he has subsequently pursued an international career with stints in China and Korea.
More recently, he returned to feature in TBT, an annual open-invitation tournament that follows a similar format as the NCAA version (64 teams, single elimination). Rosters are generally filled with ex-college stars who have played (or currently play) at a non-NBA professional level.
Playing for Carmen’s Crew, a team that generally features former Ohio State players (like Sullinger), the ex-Celtic was named tournament MVP in 2024. His efforts culminated with the clutch game-winner to clinch the team-wide $1 million prize:
In the end, Carmen’s Crew defeated Forever Coogs 69-65. It’s the second TBT win for the Crew, who also prevailed in the 2019 edition.
Scores and schedules:
The Red Sox defeated the Rangers 7-2 on Sunday, taking two of three from Texas. Boston begins a new three-game series against the Royals tonight (8:10 pm) at Kauffman Stadium.
Of greater significance on Sunday was the win by the New England Free Jacks, who repeated at Major League Rugby champions with a 20-11 win over the Seattle Seawolves.
The @NEFreeJacks have won their second consecutive MLR Championship 20-11 over @SeawolvesRugby thanks to a try from Le Roux Malan and 15 points off the boot of Jayson Potroz.
