The Red Sox and the MLB trade deadline: After getting a win over the Mariners on Monday, the Red Sox (56-49) are now a game back of the final American League wild card spot.
And given the recent comments from chief baseball officer Craig Breslow about trying improve the team, there remains a chance that the Red Sox make some additions before the MLB trade deadline on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. In that regard, few names would generate more interest than White Sox starter Garrett Crochet.
Crochet, 25, is a 2024 All-Star. Through 22 starts, he has a 3.23 ERA and a 160 strikeouts (most in the American League). As Chicago is currently an MLB-worst 27-82, Crochet is seen by MLB reporter Jon Heyman as the “more likely” of the White Sox stars to get dealt (in comparison with outfielder Luis Robert).
And per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Red Sox are one of several teams that have reportedly explored a potential trade for the talented left-hander.
“The San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles have shown various levels of interest in Crochet, according to sources familiar with the White Sox’s discussions,” noted Rosenthal. “If a trade is completed, Crochet and his new organization can figure out a plan for how to use him the rest of the season – and in his remaining two years under club control.”
Of course, the market for Crochet is robust (as Rosenthal listed). Several other major contenders are reportedly interested, meaning that any deal would likely have a high price.
In addition, along with potentially having an innings-cap (as this is his first full MLB season), teams interested in Crochet may also have to hastily sign him to a contract extension. As Rosenthal also explained, “Crochet reportedly will not pitch in October unless a team that acquires him gives him a contract extension.”
Scores and schedules:
The Red Sox routed the Mariners 14-7 on Monday, snapping a two-game losing streak.
Boston will host Seattle again at Fenway Park tonight at 7:10 p.m.
The Paris Olympic are also ongoing, with a full day of events set for Tuesday.

A conversation with the new Patriots’ coach: Jerod Mayo sat down to chat with NFL reporter Kay Adams on Monday.
On this day: In 2013, the Red Sox traded for Cy Young Award-winner Jake Peavy in a three-team deal with the White Sox and Tigers. Boston sent Jose Iglesias to Detroit and three prospects to Chicago.
Peavy went on to help the Red Sox win the World Series that season, and celebrated by buying a duck boat (which he took back to his Alabama ranch).
Daily highlight: Enjoy this satisfying sequence for Team USA field hockey in a 1-1 draw against Spain at the Olympics on Monday. After making a goal-line stop, the Americans charged down to the other end and grabbed a goal.
