Police issue warning after fake Amazon delivery men make off with iPhones

In both incidents, the suspects allegedly swiped the pricey tech deliveries just moments after FedEx dropped them off.

Hingham police are investigating after iPhones were stolen moments after being delivered to residents’ doorsteps — in one incident by a man dressed as an Amazon delivery driver.

Police said the two thefts, one in May and one in July, are unique from other package thefts because they involve iPhone deliveries that were swiped seconds after being dropped at the homes.

In the first incident, which happened on May 30 at a Bel Air Road home, FedEx delivered an iPhone and Air Pods. About 10 seconds after the delivery truck drove away, a Jeep Patriot SUV stopped at the house.

Police said two men emerged from the vehicle wearing blue Amazon vests. One man carried an empty box to the front porch and allegedly stole the two delivered boxes and replaced the items with an empty cardboard box, according to officials.

Investigators described the man who stole the packages as wearing an orange T-shirt, gray pants, Crocs, and a blue Amazon delivery vest.

The July 3 theft happened at a Daley Road home, according to Hingham police. In that incident, FedEx delivered five iPhones to the front steps, and the package was swiped minutes later. Investigators said they don’t have descriptions of the suspects involved.

Police posted images of one of the May 30 suspects on social media and are asking the public for help identifying him. Investigators are also urging anyone ordering new phones to have them delivered with a signature required or to order them for pickup directly from a store.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to contact Det. Heather Hermida or Det. Scott Tracey at 781-741-1443 or leave an anonymous tip on the Hingham police’s website.
